Hot ToysMovie Masterpiece - 1/6 Scale Fully Poseable Figure: The Avengers - Thor Review

I started collecting the Hot Toys' Avengers with Hawkeye. I was blown away by him, and have subsequently received Nick Fury, Captain American and Black Widow. All brilliant pieces. Thor is the latest figure to be released. Once again, the quality is outstanding. However, I only gave him 4 (3.5) stars because Thor is even more limited in posing potential than Captain America is.

The sculpting is spot-on; he looks like Chris Hemsworth and the hair has just enough flexibility to not look like a helmet. The costume replica is highly detailed and looks exactly as it does in the film. The red cape folds beautifully between the shoulder blades and the color is bright and vibrant. Moreover, it came out of the box without a single wrinkle. The packaging is given just as much consideration as the figures themselves. Thor has the fewest accessories so far of the releases. He has multiple hands/grips, which is normal for these figures, plus the hammer and the Tesseract transport device from the end of the movie. That's it. The hammer is made of metal, and feels substantial. Very nice. Honestly, there's not a lot more they could have given him. I do wish they had given him two sets of arms, though, one bare and one armored. This is because the armor as replicated looks great but is also extremely limiting.

The articulation in the legs, knees and ankles makes the figure incredibly well-balanced. He easily stands without the aid of the stand, which is impressive. However, I wanted to pose him in the "lightning pose" with Mjolnir held aloft but his arms will not even come level with his shoulders - the costume is that restrictive. It's why the product images have so few poses. His arms stay close to the body and even bending at the elbow is difficult. This was somewhat disappointing despite the fact that the figure looks fantastic.

Overall, he looks great with the team and I do not regret the purchase. However, I think his price should have been less than the other considering the reduced flexibility and minimal accessories. Because this was such an expensive item I did my homework before purchasing the table. I looked at some cheaper tables to begin with but found that they couldn't come close to the Thomas table by Learning Curve. This table is made of solid wood and took me about 5 minutes to put together. I was able to get the playmat for free with the table through a promotion Toys R Us was having at the time of purchase. Another thing that sold me on the Thomas table was that this is the same table they have at Barrnes and Noble and you can imagine how many children play on that day after day. We have the table set up in our son's playroom since it is such a large piece. Unlike many other toys we have purchased in the past, this is one that we will save for years to come. They are expensive, but they are also made well and come with a lifetime guarantee. If you have a problem with one of their products you simply send it to them with a letter and within about 1-2 business weeks they will send you a brand new item. If you are looking to buy a train table I would highly recommend this one. Though it is more expensive, it is worth it in the long run. Why spend $80-$100 on a table that is only going to last a year or so when you can spend a little more and save it forever? One other hint...Michael's Arts and Crafts and A.C. Moore Craft Stores also carry a decent amount of the wooden Thomas toys. Look in your local paper for their 40% off coupons. They apply to Thomas and Friends which makes it a lot more affordable. :)
