Topeak BabySeat with Rack - TCS2101 Review

Seat is outstanding. CRITICAL to know: Many bikes actually don't have the proper seat stay (tail part of frame) to mount the child seat - here's what you must check on your bike before you buy - or be prepared to get creative - and don't expect help from Topeak or the bike shops because I'm sure they prefer not to hold any liability... The two bars which go from the rear axle of every bike up to the back of the seat post are called the seat stays. (See wikipedia for a diagram on bike parts).

The manual literally reads "The Topeak BabySeat is designed to work on frames with seatstay rack mounts AND threaded dropout eyelets only. Do not use the Topeak BabySeat on frames without these fittings for safety reasons."

Much to my shock, many bikes do not have screw mounting posts on each seat stay and Topeak doesn't point out that BSII requires a bike with these posts. The reason is that the black rack (which serves as the base of the baby seat) has two steal bars which extend from the front of the rack down to the top point of the seat stay and it serves to stabilize and hold stationary the rack and ultimately your baby. (Without them it would just pivot on the screws which connect at the axle) and the whole thing would flip back to the ground.

The problem is, the rods are pre-bent and have pre-drilled holes which are specifically engineered to connect to a dual connection seat stay. My wife's Schwinn Sierra only has the patented Schwinn single point seat stay - not compatible; nor did my Novara (REI) Mnt. Bike, or either of my parent's cruisers. Moreover, we went to the bike shop today and a ton of the bikes on the shelf don't have them. Topeak literally says the child seat will not work or mount on bikes without them (the guy at REI urgently reminded me of this when I asked him about clamping it over the phone..., so what's a desperate father to do? I found a creative, but VERY SAFE fix. I recommend you try to find a bike shop to advise if you really want this seat, but be fore-warned - it very well could not work at all with your bike. As a business person I am shocked the engineers at Topeak designed such an innovative product, but got away with designing it like that - they probably lost a huge portion of the addressable market by that single move. Still, it is a great - innovative seat!

My son just got this version, he already had the green version.Basicly, skannerz are toys that read bar codes to collect monsters and creatures, and battle them. It can be any bar code and that is what makes them the perfect grocery shopping toy! No whining about how long you are taking anymore. Now my son is happy to follow me down the aisles and scan items...This version is a bit better in that there are more monsters available. There are a limited number of monsters to collect so the more, the better. There are also more options with this unit. You can choose to do battle or run, something you can't do with other versions...and if you win a battle you gain another monster. The flip side is if you lose a battle, you lose the monster. But the changes do make for a better game.The game takes 3 AAA batteries and you do need to change them a bit fast or you lose the data which is really frustrating for your kids. There is also a reset in the event of an electrical problem. Which also clears all the data.I did have a problem with the other unit and the company customer service is going to send another one so they are quite responsive and that is very good to know. Overall, I am very happy with this as it gives my son something to do during a time when he is usually quite bored. shopping! Skywalker Trampolines 15-ft. Square Trampoline and Enclosure Combo Review

The Skywalker 15 ft square trampoline is very well constructed and was fairly easy to assemble by following the instructions carefully. It does take a few hours to put together but all parts went together very well. My son and his friends have been using it for more than a month and really enjoy jumping on it almost every day. One of the issues I have found is that several of the ties at the top of the poles on the safety netting sometimes slip down and have to be raised back up and tightened across the top of the poles. Another issue is the button hole feature that is used to connect the mat with the springs does not always stay secure as the openings have stretched and can leave a gap at the edge of the mat. I believe this trampoline is better built and more durable that many others. The price on Amazon was very good for the quality of the trampoline. I read a lot of reviews and considered many other brands before deciding on this one. You need to consider the weight limit, guage of steel, number of springs, safety, durability and appropriate size and shape before buying based on your requirements and budget. The heavier product (shipping weight) is generally the better unit to purchase. I would recommend this trampoline.

LEGO Exclusive Set #10226 Sopwith Camel Review

A big, gorgeous LEGO model that's fun to build, functionally interesting, and tweakable.

I think this set is a great one for an adult or teenager that enjoys LEGO, or possibly for younger LEGO fans that are lucky enough to have an interested adult to help them. This 883-piece set comes with two instruction booklets to build only one model, but what a model it is!

This Sopwith Camel looks fantastic! (Of course we're talking relative to the LEGO universe; we're not talking about precision scale models, here.) The beautiful color scheme includes lots of light tan and dark tan (rather rare) pieces. There are stickers, but only 8. From the silver engine cowling to the nicely-tapered fuselage, this is nicely done.

And the functions are cool. As a sailplane pilot myself, I was glad to see the correct movements of the control surfaces in response to my moving the control stick. Move the stick right, and the ailerons (on both upper and lower wings) will deflect to roll you to the right. Pull back on the stick, and the elevator deflects upward to pitch the aircraft's nose upward. Neat!

It would be fun to see _more_ deflection, but it's probably nearly to scale as it is, and after some adjustment works quite well (but see below about elevator deflection).

Here are my measurements:

The control surfaces are moved by strings. The strings come in two obviously different lengths. There's a small plastic "dot" on each end, that fits over a stub. Thus, there is no need to cut or tie strings. After assembly, some adjustment can be done by rotating the end "dot", effectively shortening the string. This worked pretty well to adjust the ailerons to a neutral position when the stick is centered.

Unfortunately, this adjustment technique didn't solve my problem with the elevator (that's the tail's horizontal control surface). While I had built exactly according to the instructions, I ended up with a dissatisfying small amount of downward movement for the elevator. Pushing the stick as far forward as possible in the cockpit would result in only a _slight_ downward deflection. After some cogitation, I solved the problem by attaching the control strings to the top of the elevators _one_stud_ forward of where the instructions show. This resulted in a much more satisfying range of deflection, at least in my model. Basically, the strings were a little too short to attach where the instructions indicated.

The Sopwith Camel set is fun to build. I purposely spread it out over three leisurely evenings. The brick-built rudder is great, and I really liked the clever tapering fuselage. The ailerons and elevator "feel" a bit cluttered, but again we're not talking about a flying model here. The plane is perfectly sturdy, with rolling wheels and an 8-cylinder rotary engine that turns with the (brick-built) propeller like it should. As far as I can tell, all of the parts are "standard" pieces, except for the strings and maybe for the 6 x 6 tiles needed for the round British sticker symbols. In other words, I don't think the LEGO company specially-produced "juniorized" (or in my thinking "cheating") parts just for this set. They're all perfectly usable for other LEGO creations. That's a big plus in my book.

Interesting or useful parts you get include eight big 8 x 16 plates (four each of light tan and dark green), two springy shock absorbers (you really don't see them in the completed model), 16 silver dots (1 x 1 round plates) and 8 big silver curved pieces for the engine cowling.

Most of the LEGO we buy is for my children (esp. for my 6-year old) and I don't often get a set for myself. I'm completely pleased with this new Sopwith Camel set. I look forward to disassembling it, seeing what else I can build from it, and then reassembling the Camel at some future date.
