LEGO Technic Snow Groomer (8263) Review

Both the A (snow groomer) and B (arctic tracker -- see my photos above) models are clever and elegant designs, and for the price (fifty at MSRP) you get a good mix of useful and unique parts (the latter including large H frames, black treads, and black and red body panels). Where the designs do not score so high is in playability, at least with my kids. The main problem is that the treads are sluggish: on wood floors the hard plastic tracks slide, and on carpet they have only moderate grip. I haven't marked the set down because of this, but I just wanted to mention it for those parents considering one model over another. Both designs are still great fun. Regardless, I don't believe Lego has ever produced a snow groomer before, so this is a rare set.

Power Wheels Ultimate Terrain Traction Jeep Hurricane Review

Let me start off by saying that my children love this toy. My daughter is 6, and my son is 5.

The original battery only lasted for 45 minutes at a time, so I replaced it with a 32 Amp Hr battery that now lasts all day.

The toy worked well for the first few months, but then I could hear a grinding sound when my children drove up slight grades. When I took the unit apart I discovered that the pinion gear attached to the motor is metal, (most likely steel), and the remainder of the gears in the reduction system are plastic. The teeth on final drive gear that mates to the hub were stripped. The material of the final drive gear appears to be Delrin 150, which is a fairly good material, that is commonly used for light duty gears. These are not what I would categorize as light duty gears though. To top it off you can only purchase the gearbox, and not the individual gears, and then you can only purchase it from authorized repair centers which are not easy to find. For the money one pays for this pricey toy, the drive system should be more reliable, and Fisher-Price should correct this deficiency.

Star Wars "Become A Jedi" Lightsaber Construction Kit Review

Opened and assembled the Lightsaber FX Construction Kit and here are my impressions.

First thing I noticed was that all of the pieces to build the hilt are plastic (save 2). Given the quality of the other lightsaber fxs made by Master Replicas (I own 4 and love them all), I was expecting metal. A downside of these plastic handle pieces is that when fully assembled, the plastic parts squeek when you swing the lightsaber and they rub together, like a cheap toy.

Second and most significant disappointment is the light. The blade doesn't light up like the other Master Replica lightsabers. It is bright at its base (comparable to other FX lightsabers) but then grows darker as the light travels up the blade. There are a string of LEDs I believe in the previous Lightsaber FXs but not in this one. But when you put it side by side with the other lightsabers, it just looks different.

Third, the sound effects are the same sample loop but quieter when compared to the previous lightsaber FXs.

Forth, the blade is about 6 inches shorter than the other Lightsaber FXs but I think this is advertised on the box so not a surprise.

And fifth, this set does not include a stand. Not sure why not...

And when it is all finally assembled, it feels like a cheap immitation of the previous lightsaber FXs produced by MR. Given that MR no longer owns the license to make lightsabers, I am guessing this version of the FX lightsaber was a way to produce the cheapest possible set for the same amount of money with little or no reprocussions.

Overall, I am very disappointed and think that anyone who is expecting comparable quality to the other FX lightsabers will be as well.

Abyss 20-inch Kent Bike Review

received this bike to put together for my sons b-day present... packaged very well.. only minor scuffing to seat post when received. but as another review stated... the fork was so ill-manufactured that not even the front wheel would fit. it needed at least another 1/4 inch.. And mind you that this is not the first bike I have put together. E-mailed amazon, they are picking it up tomorrow, and a new one already on the way... I will write review as well when that one arrives. but be careful if you order this bike, don't wait to put it together, do it quickly as you might have manufacturing defects... I will update with another review when the "2nd" one comes in.. "fingers are crossed"

OK.... part two of the then Kent Abyss bike.... received package from UPS, the box looked...well....horrible.. I was hesitant to accept, but being only 1 day till b-day time, I chose to take it. I didn't have to unstapled the box, as it easily came apart from it's condition. and to my astonishment, the bike was perfectly intact, no scratches and just a cracked rear tail deflector easily glued back together.. Wow!! I put it together, no issues with the front fork and tire.. went on very nice. assembled this bike. This is actually a really sharp looking kids bike, this will be more than be adequate for a kids "first" bmx style bike, better buying this than a $300+ bike and they never end up using it. This bike has nice paint and graphics, and rides true. I am very happy with this purchase, but what I'm even more happy about is AMAZON Customer Service!! This bike was here one day after the other was picked up from UPS, and e-mail updates from amazon where great!!! Did a little custom work after as I took off the original grips and placed some ODI long grips on, as they are softer and have far more grip that the standard issue grips it comes with, look good too!! birthday boy was very happy!!! THANK YOU AMAZON!!

Eitech Classic Ferris Wheel Construction Set Review

I purchased this model ferris wheel kit for myself, I love ferris wheels, and the different models of them, that are out there. The total frame and wheel itself is constructed of, I believe, stainless steel. The only plastic parts on the model are the colored cars, and the battery powered motor, and gears. This was manufactured in Germany, and most of the writing on the box is in German. Luckily, the assembly instructions are all visual with pictures and not written out. At first, it's hard to begin construction, you have to really pay attention to the pictures while assembling the whole thing. Once you get started, it's pretty easy going.

If you happen to have big hands, handling the tiny screws and hex nuts may pose a problem. It takes patience and it's hard to squeeze your hand in some of those tight places to get a hex nut started onto the screw and even more challenging to get it all tightened. The good thing is that they provide you with the necessary tools to put the model together.

It's all held together with screws and hex nuts, no gluing at all. Once it's all together and snug tight, it forms a very sturdy, reliable model ferris wheel. It's not K'Nex by any means, but it's worth buying and watching it run, I say go for it if you are up for a challenge with tiny screws and hex nuts.
