UMX Sbach 342 3D BNF Basic Review

I started flying three weeks ago with very little simulator time, so at first I was very nervous about purchasing an intermediate plane. Boy, it was the best decision I've ever made. This is, by far, the best UMX micro plane available right now for an intermediate pilot. Like the above reviewers have said, it truly flies on rails. And with the AS3X system, I've flown it in 10mph winds without an issue. I actually prefer a little bit of wind to help with landings (see below). Here are the parts I enjoy the most about the Sbach:

- Insanely long battery time. I'm coming from a UMX Carbon Cub, and I have to tell you, this thing destroys that plane with regards to flying time. Due to it's lighter weight, and more aerodynamic styling, I can get 8 minutes off of a 180m battery without any issues. The Carbon Cub, on a slightly windy day especially, will start dropping after 4 minutes on a similar battery. It cuts through wind very nicely.

- Tough, tough, tough. On my tenth or eleventh battery with this guy, I screwed up a downward spin by not applying enough throttle at the very end, resulting in a nose first (spike!) into the dirt road. Hard. During my walk of shame, I feared the worst. On a crash that wasn't even as severe, my UMX Carbon Cub had managed to snap both wings, cave in the fuselage, snap the prop shaft, and damage a servo. However, I was amazed when I picked up the little Sbach and noticed the only damage was a snapped prop shaft. Five minutes later I was back in the air. It was truly amazing. I believe this has to do with an expertly placed plastic support inside the fuselage, and the lightness of the plane.

- Inverted flight is a blast! Something I struggled to do with the Carbon Cub, comes second nature with this amazing plane. Nothing is more fun than a fly-by, inverted, then pulling an outside loop and doing it again. I'm still a fairly new pilot, but this plane makes learning really fun.

As much as I love this plane, it does have a few things to consider.

1. It's not a beginner plane. It will not 'float' at all when landing, it requires constant throttle to avoid the bounce effect. Also, a good beginner plane will have a natural tendency to right itself to allow for errors. This plane does not. It's a guided missile. For your first plane, I still wholeheartedly recommend the UMX Carbon Cub. Skip the Champ, buy a DX6i, and go Carbon Cub. You will love it.

For settings, I recommend you set your Expo at 50% for Ailerons, Rudder, and Elevator until you get more comfortable. I always keep D/R 100% across the board, just in case I need to get out of trouble fast. Without expo, it can be a handful for even intermediate pilots.

2. Landing gear "covers" are troublesome for grass landings. I still have mine attached since I only land on asphalt or dirt roads, but I've heard many stories of them ripping off when attempting to land on grass. Just about the only sketchy design feature, and it's purely cosmetic.

3. This plane is sold as a Basic version, so, no battery or charger. Keep that in mind!

This plane was a real surprise to me. I was looking for something to move on to after the Carbon Cub UMX, and this plane is perfect for that. It's fast, you get long flights, and it will even grow with you when you start learning 3D. You can't go wrong with this UMX.
