There are several upgrades available including motors up to 9500 KV that can stand lipo power. Not sure these are going to be big enough for dirt track racing. It would have to be pretty smooth. They work great inside on carpet and on like a ball field or something fairly smooth. Compared to Team Associated's short track truck these have a wider wheel base and handle the sharp turns really well.
If I had one complaint, it would be the shock location and durability. We run a couple of these inside on a smaller oval track and seem to blow the shocks out quite a bit. They snap back together pretty good and are easy to fill back up with oil but it doesn't take much of a hit to pop them apart. If they were on the inside of the A-arms instead of right out front with no protection that would help a bunch.
Parts don't cost much if you break something. It comes with a very detailed manual including good pics and all the part numbers. We haven't broke anything but a couple of steering connectors which isn't surprising since they took a direct hit against a block wall at full speed both times.
I have had brushed motors and they are ok but I would recommend spending a little more on the brushless motors. They run better and last longer but they do cost a little more. I would say they are a good investment though.

Team Associated 20104 RC18T2 Brushless RTR RC Electric Truggy Review
This is a great size to start out on in the RC hobby. They come with a nice radio control that allows to adjust top speed and steering range. I have 8 and 5 year old boys and they can handle this size pretty good when turned down. There are several upgrades available including motors up to 9500 KV that can stand lipo power.
