These things are great! It's a video walkie talkie, and it works the way you would expect it to. The audio and video are pretty clear, and the reception is also pretty good. I was impressed with how the night vision works as well. I got these for my nephews for Christmas, and it's a good thing I didn't have something like this when I was a kid--I was into enough mischief as it was.

The devices let you send video in real time, with a relatively smooth display. The buttons control the video that is displayed on the device (not what's being sent). For example, if your friend is video chatting with you and enters a dark room, you can activate the night vision on their device without asking them. It's all pretty seamless. The text functionality is pretty similar to a cell phone.

A couple of caveats: They charge with a USB hookup--no wall hookup included. There's only one mini-USB wire included (it's really short, too, only about 4-6 inches long). Luckily, I had a few extra mini-USB cords around the house. Also, there's no audio, unless you have the earpieces (included with the devices) hooked up via the standard headphone jack on the device. As far as durability goes, the devices are pretty lightweight, but don't seem fragile. They feel about like a calculator--I suspect they would hold up to normal use, although dropping it on concrete would probably be a one-time venture.

All-in-all, this is an impressive device, and a GREAT spy toy. I think the 6 year old + age suggestion is spot on, and the $80.00 price tag seems like a fair deal (I got mine at Toys 'R Us).
