My 5-year-old daughter has become Star Wars obsessed in the last month and will be dressing as a Jedi for Halloween, so I brightened up her world by telling her I'd dress up as one too. We're going all out, complete with custom-tailored costumes for both of us. Every Jedi needs a lightsaber, so I decided on the Kit Fisto FX Lightsaber rather than the $8 plastic ones I see everywhere. My first impression is that this thing is COOL! Here's a quick breakdown of the pros and cons:PROS:
- Solid Construction: This "toy" is built like a tank...even the little knob to turn it on is metal. It is heavy and durable and the blade is solid. I don't know how durable the electronics in it will be, or how long the LEDs in the blade will last, but the outside is as solid as can be.
- Bright Blade: Nice bright green blade with an up/down effect when you turn it on/off. In photos it looks totally cool and super bright.
- Removable Blade: Blade can be removed by unscrewing the top of the hilt. It comes with a metal insert for the hilt to cover the hole left by the missing blade. Nice touch.
- Belt Clip: Comes with a belt clip (though it's cheap plastic) so that you can carry the hilt with you (a must for a costume). The hilt has a Covertec wheel on it that snaps into the clip. Works well and is apparently the same way the characters carried their lightsabers in the movies.
- Display Stand: Comes with a display stand that looks pretty good, even though it is cheap plastic. You can configure the stand two different ways, so that you can display it with or without the blade. The stand also has a compartment to store the belt clip and hilt insert.
- "Realistic" Sounds: Has "real" lightsaber sounds sampled from the movies. The motion-sensing features work well, sync'ing the sounds with motion and clashing.
CONS:
- Sound Quality: Although the sounds are accurate, the quality could be better and louder. Clearly the speaker in the hilt is very cheap.
- No Sound without Blade: When you remove the blade, sound is not possible. For fun it makes a little short-circuit sound instead. I'd rather have sound all the time.
- Diameter of Hilt: Granted, this is a bit subjective, but I think the diameter of the hilt is slightly too big. My guess is that this is a consequence of the size of the blade and electronics. Considering how heavy it is, if you have small hands it might be hard to grip well when swinging it around.
- Belt Clip is Cheap: The belt clip is a great addition, but is very cheap plastic. I won't be surprised if the part of it that clips to the belt breaks. I may order an actual Covertec WIPS System - Belt clip instead.
- Too big and heavy for little kids: Most people probably wouldn't buy this for a little kid, but if you are considering that, be aware the very little kids (like my 5 year old) are way too little for it. It is heavy, with a big hilt, and the blade is very long. Handing this to a little kid is begging for broken items and injuries. If you want something for a little kid that is similar, the Star Wars Ultimate Anakin FX Lightsaber is a better choice. They are around $35-40, lighter, and the blade is probably 8-10" shorter. No removable blade though.
Conclusion:
All in all, this is great fun! I have "dueled" with my daughter a dozen times already and had a blast doing it. If you grew up with Star Wars, I challenge you to turn on this lightsaber, swing it around, and not feel like a kid again. I give it four stars. If the sound quality were slightly better or if you could get sound without the blade, that would have bumped it up to 4.5 or 5 stars in my opinion.
